The story goes that the lady I purchased it from says it belonged to her grand father. She was in her 70s and she said the he ran the strongman game at a circus the toured the western states. He worked for it many years and when the owner died his son took over. He got in an argument with the son and quit. When he left he said I'm taking my "damn hammer" " I payed for it an damn it  I'm keeping it". So growing up she always heard him talking about his hammer. Sometime in the early mid century the grandfather was told to cover the head with a light coat of wax to preserve it, hense the condition. The handle was also replaced at some point and is done well and very sturdy 36" with a 7" diameter head that is 10" wide weights 15lbs. She also claimed that in 3 generations there were more conversations started over the hammer than any other item they collected.
