This is a pair of the Liberator
GENERAL
SAN MARTIN
SABERS with elegant engraved scabbards as well as tastefully etched blade with the floral motif and the marking "
GENERAL JOSE de SAN MARTIN
". These sabers were used after 1947 by Combat General Officers only, as part of their uniforms but the used got extended later by law to all Generals. These sabers were manufactured by the Argentine Arsenal Esteban de Luca. The sabers exhibit light nice even patina. The blade of the sabers are in beautiful condition, one side is plain, the other side is etched with the words "
General JOSE de SAN MARTIN
". The blades are bright in excellent shape with minimal if any, handling marks, scratches, grease and a scattered few tiny unnoticeable nicks on the edge. The handles are made of ebony from India or wood finished with black lacquer; they are in good shape, the silver color one has a small indentation between the gusset and the screw, they might have minimal scratches, handling marks. The gussets are cruciform with classy decoration; the gold one has a clover in the middle. The scabbards fit well the saber blades and they are made out of medal with minimal scratches, handling marks. The scabbards are exquisitely decorated and have 2 rings, "medal stitching" and end buckles. The gold color one has a few small aging spots below the olive engraving by the gusset. The silver tone scabbard has a couple of small shallow dents towards the end. Book picture for reference only.
Overall a fabulous exquisite pair of General Jose de SAN MARTIN sabers one in gold color, one in silver that are very attractive and extremely hard to come by; a perfect addition to your collection!
The sabers with scabbards are 23 1/2" or 59.5 cm long.
