Rare and original, ca1870's CDV Photograph of P. T. Barnum’s Side Show / Circus Performer / Midget
John Mertz (aka: Major Mite) in outstanding, near mint condition. This wonderful CDV photo measures approx. 2 1/4" by 3 1/4" and is mounted on its original photographer's card mount (overall size of card mount is 2 1/2” by 4”). The Photograph pictures the diminutive performer in full length and dressed in formal clothes. He holds a diminutive cane in his right hand and his hat rests on a pedestal at the right. The photo carries the mark of the photographer – A. & G. Taylor of Chicago with an over-print by successor Jones of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John Mertz - known as Major Mite - was born in Austria in 1853 and first appeared with Barnum's Circus in 1874. He appeared with the circuses of P. T. Barnum, Adam Forepaugh and John Robinson before his retirement in 1911.
This very rare and original, CDV Photograph of sideshow Performer Major Mite is in near mint condition. The Photograph itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Photo and the Card Mount are clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved.
This Photograph is accompanied by a CDV of Admiral Dot in poor condition (see the scans below).
