Historical context
:
The gaucho designates in Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil, a herdsman of the South American plains (the pampas), the same in Paraguay, in the south-east of Bolivia (Tarija) and southern Chile. . In Brazil, the term is at the origin of the gentilé gaúcho, which is used to designate the inhabitants of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The etymology of this term would originate from the Quechua language huacchu (“orphan, solitary”), or from caló (gypsy, Spanish bohemian) gacho (“peasant, lover”). In Chile, we speak more readily of huaso.
We call gaucha (or china) the companion of the gaucho. As good a rider as he is, she takes care of growing cereals (wheat and corn), watermelons, onions, baking bread in the oven, and weaving her companion's ponchos.
