checker is a kind of long-bladed melee weapon that can deliver both stabbing and chopping blows.
The sword blade is single-edged, slightly curved, the total length of the weapon usually does not exceed one meter.
Sometimes (quite rarely) there are also specimens with one and a half sharpening.
The hilt of the checker consists of a curved handle without a guard, which is a characteristic distinguishing feature of this weapon.
The checker is intended for applying mainly chopping blows and has never been used for fencing.
This is indicated by the checker handle and the way the hand is placed on the handle. Basically, the checker was in service with the Russian army (Cossack and native regiments). The sharpness of the checkers was not fundamental for this weapon.

The Cossacks borrowed this weapon from the Caucasus. It is believed that the Adygei (Circassians) invented the checker, from whom the Kuban and Terek Cossacks “borrowed” it. The checker was already known in the XII-XIII centuries, but for a long time it was only an auxiliary weapon that only complemented the saber or sword, and traced its lineage from a large knife. Initially, the saber was worn practically under the arm of the left hand, while it was always hung up with the blade up. In the Adyghe language, this weapon is called "seshkhue" or "sashkho", which means "big or long knife". The first written description of checkers dates back to 1625.
