Description
Historical context:
The Bavarian army was the army of the Duchy, then of the Kingdom of Bavaria. It was integrated into the German Army (Deutsches Heer) after 1870. It kept unit names of its own until World War I.
In times of war, it is under the authority of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany and Commander-in-Chief (Bundesfeldherrn) of the Empire.
It retains the light blue uniforms and the plumed helmet (Raupenhelm) as parade dress but aligns with the organization, training and field dress of the Prussian army, with the cockade and white collar badges and Bavarian blue.
On the eve of the First World War, the Bavarian army had 4,089 officers, doctors, veterinarians and administrative staff, 83,125 non-commissioned officers and soldiers, 16,918 horses.
