Description
Model history:
The Marine Officer's saber model 1853: Almost identical to the model 1848, but still different by its "lightened" blade with a hollow side and by the addition of the "high" imperial crown on the anchor of the clevis .
* Blade: Slightly curved, with a hollow pan. Sometimes with two hollow sides, wider, the latter will gradually disappear on the following models.
* Guard: Guard and branch wired in gilded and chiseled copper, openwork frame decorated with an uncrowned anchor (it will be in fact) decorated with water leaves, small undecorated rear tray, quillon in the shape of a dolphin's head mythological, rocket with straight flutes in black horn, cap with long tail decorated with scallop shells surmounted by a mirror.
* Scabbard: Black leather with three gilt copper fittings with two rings, crowned anchor on the clevis and button in the shape of a rosette (often in the shape of St Jacques in fact).
Evolution of the marine anchor
The navy anchor adorning its guard evolved with the changes of regime, crowned under Louis-Philippe, uncrowned during the Second Republic, again crowned under Napoleon III and again uncrowned under the Third Republic. The 1902 modification, little known, is quite rare to observe.
