Historical context
:
The National Gendarmerie is one of the oldest French institutions. It retains powers of extraordinary justice (known as "provost") until the Revolution.
In 1720, the Maréchaussée was symbolically placed under the administrative authority of the Gendarmerie de France, a body of heavy cavalry assimilated to the military household of the king, which was dissolved on April 1, 1788, and in 1791 the National Assembly, which did not wish Not keeping the name of Maréchaussée, too closely linked to the Old Regime, gave it the name of "National Gendarmerie".
