Description
Historical contextThe first German fire brigade was created in 1854 in the center of Berlin, at 13/14 Großen Hamburger Straße (main street in Hamburg). It was initially equipped with horse-drawn carriages.
In 1933, at the start of the Third Reich, all Prussian firefighters were subordinated to the police, taking the popular appellation Feuerlöschpolizei (fire extinguisher police), although they never officially had that name. In 1938, under the Fire Fighting Act (Gesetz über das Feuerlöschwesen), all Reich fire brigades became police troops under the direct supervision of the Minister of the Interior (Reichsminister des Innern). Professional firefighters officially became Feuerschutzpolizei (fire protection policeman), and the volunteer corps was integrated into the police force. The fire engines, so far red, turned green.
Also in 1938, the taps (pipes, lances, divisions) were changed to correspond to the standards of the Reich; up to now, each Land had its own standards, which prevented cooperation between Länder.
