Historical context
:
The Air and Space Force is one of the four components of the French Armed Forces; the other components being the Army, the National Navy and the National Gendarmerie.
The French Air Force is the oldest air force in the world. The first five squadrons were created at the beginning of 1912 and then depended on the French Army. The Air Force became a full-fledged army on July 2, 1934.
As of July 1, 2019, 40,800 soldiers and 5,200 civilians serve in its ranks2. It totals 170,000 flight hours per year. Its annual budget is 7.5 billion euros in 2020, or 20% of the budget of the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
It is the 8th air force in the world and the 1st in Western Europe. She also has extensive combat experience.
