Historical context
:
When the First World War broke out in 1914, Italy, which until then had been an ally of the Triple Alliance (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy) decided to remain neutral before committing itself to the Triple Entente (France, Russia, United Kingdom) which grants him numerous territorial concessions in the event of victory. Italian operations remain limited to a front which opposes them, most of the war, to Austria-Hungary. From 1915 to 1917 the Italian army, poorly equipped and badly commanded, nevertheless manages to penetrate a few kilometers into enemy territory, the Austrians generally remain on the defensive. However in the fall of 1917 the Italians suffered a crushing defeat at Caporetto before obtaining victory at Vittorio Veneto in November 1918 which led the Austro-Hungarian Empire to request an armistice which put an end to the conflict.
