Historical context
:
The Swiss sword, model 1842/1852 is copied from the French model of 1831 of the French foot troops. The blades were made in Switzerland by (S.J.G. NEUHAUSEB) but also in Germany, with the markings (FHOSTER, SOLINGEN), (WESTER & Co SOLINGEN) or (GEBR WEYERSBERG SOLINGEN) as on the sword here present.
This model will be used by sappers, fortress troops, telegrapher and balloon pioneers. The serrated blade is not intended to inflict horrific wounds, as its appearance seems to suggest. It was designed to cut shrubs, which were both in the line of fire and useful for camouflage of the future firing position.
The massive and heavy handle, Roman style, consists of a single piece of ribbed brass with a round pommel, it has 20 grooves and a symmetrical straight cruise, it completely covers the tang. The blade is massive of very good quality, devoid of gutter as it should be and has 28 saw teeth.
The leather scabbard has a bowl/spring secured by a screw on the back of the body. To be compatible with the scabbard. The clevis has a leather strap held on the trigger guard by stitches. The brass fittings are fixed to the body by three rivets on the clevis and three on the end.

The small screw and the original leather strap are still present. It is different from the French model by its straight finish of the scabbard and its saw teeth on the blade. The part is 100% original guaranteed ! Very massive and pleasant to hold in hand, even more beautiful to admire in the window, really a sublime and rare piece, to seize !
