    WW Coles Circus Card Ticket of Captain & Mrs. Bates, 1878 Tallest Man The Giants.
    This is a great circus card for W.W. Coles Circus and Menagerie, of New York and New Orleans for the 1879 season. It shows the married couple of Anna and Martin Van Bueren Bates. Captain Bates was 32 and Anna was 27 at the time. Captain Bates was a real Captain as he fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private and was promoted to the rank of Captain before being wounded.
    The card is in pretty good condition and complete. There are no rips or creases. The top 1/4 inch of the card is slightly darker due to exposure to light. The top and bottom edges have a little roughness to them, but are still in good shape. (See photos.)
